US Forest Service announces National Get Outdoors Day events

U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell is encouraging kids and their families to reconnect with nature and have fun by participating in the 4th annual National Get Outdoors Day, Saturday, June 11.The event, known as ‘GO Day’, is an effort to attract new, diverse communities to outdoor activities and to motivate kids to explore their national forests and other public lands.

USDA Releases Plan to Promote Agroforestry as Means to Improve the Environment

USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan today unveiled a plan that will help farmers, ranchers and woodland owners enhance productivity, profitability and environmental stewardship by using the practice of agroforestry. Agroforestry intentionally combines agriculture and forestry to create integrated and sustainable land-use systems that take advantage of the interactive benefits from combining trees and shrubs with crops and/or livestock.

Colorado River Rescue

Yuma, Arizona - Shortly before 1:00 pm today, the City of Yuma Fire Department received a call stating there were two people in the river, near the West Wetlands boat ramp, that needed help getting out. Arriving firefighters found one man had already been pulled out of the water by a bystander, and was having a medical emergency. That man was treated at the scene and transported to YRMC for a non water related illness.

Human Smuggling Attempt Along St. Lawrence River Intercepted

Red Cross Responding to Northwest Flooding

Washington, DC - The American Red Cross is responding as rising rivers force people from their homes in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, and Red Cross workers are preparing for additional flooding in several other northwestern states as rivers threaten to overflow their banks.

Reclamation Announces Summer Tour Schedule at Shasta Dam

Redding, California - The Bureau of Reclamation will start the summer tour schedule at Shasta Dam on Saturday, May 28, 2011. Daily tour times are 9 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2:15 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Reclamation Releases Environmental Documents on New Flashboards at Keswick Dam

Sacramento, California - The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public review and comments a Draft Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact (Draft EA/FONSI) on the addition of new flashboards to the spillway gates at Keswick Dam. These modifications would increase Keswick Reservoir’s volume by about 2 percent, allowing increased operation of the Shasta Powerplant during peak revenue hours.

Meeting on Grand Calumet River Cleanup Scheduled

Chicago, Illinois - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and three other federal and state agencies will host a meeting June 2 to update the public on a contaminated sediment cleanup planned for the East Chicago and Hammond, Indiana, area. The cleanup, funded under the Great Lakes Legacy Act, involves the Grand Calumet River and Roxana Marsh, near the West Branch of the Grand Calumet.
