Public Scoping Begins on Proposed Hydropower Project at Ridgway Dam

Colorado - Reclamation announced today that it will hold a public scoping meeting to provide information and answer questions about a proposed hydropower project at Ridgway Dam in Ouray County, Colo. The project, proposed by the Tri-County Water Conservancy District, would generate electricity using the existing water releases from Ridgway Dam throughout the year.

Fargo, North Dakota - On April 7, the President declared an emergency for North Dakota as a result of the 2011 Red River flooding. As of April 13, Red River flooding in Fargo, N.D. reached “major” flood levels, although waters continue to recede. The Red River at Grand Forks, North Dakota is at “major” flood stage, with the crest likely to occur on Friday, April 15.

Red Cross Responds to Storms and Rising Red River in North Dakota

Washington, DC - Today, the American Red Cross is responding across the South after severe spring storms affected hundreds of thousands of people in Louisiana, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee and North Carolina. At the same time, Red Cross disaster workers are on the ground in North Dakota and Minnesota as the Red River continues to rise. In fact, since late March, the Red Cross has played a role in 14 disaster events in 13 states across the nation.

EPA to Open Public Comment on Proposed Standards to Protect Aquatic Ecosystems

Washington, DC - As required by the Clean Water Act and pursuant to a settlement agreement, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is proposing for public comment standards to protect billions of fish and other aquatic organisms drawn each year into cooling water systems at large power plants and factories. The proposal, based on Section 316(b) of the Clean Water Act, would establish a common sense framework, putting a premium on public input and flexibility.

Uncertain Future for Joshua Trees Projected with Climate Change

Flagstaff, Arizona - Temperature increases resulting from climate change in the Southwest will likely eliminate Joshua trees from 90 percent of their current range in 60 to 90 years, according to a new study led by U.S. Geological Survey ecologist Ken Cole.

EPA Updates Web Tool Providing Clean Water Violation Trends and State Enforcement Response

Washington, DC - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today released updated data and a mapping tool designed to help the public compare water quality trends over the last two years. The web-based, interactive map includes “state dashboards” that provide detailed information for each state, including information on facilities that are violating the Clean Water Act and the actions states are taking to enforce the law and protect people’s health.
