Monroe, Missouri - A public meeting held by representatives of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will give interested parties the opportunity to review and comment on a draft Supplemental Environmental Assessment of the impacts of rebuilding and doubling the length of a 70-year-old lock on the Mississippi River.
Lock and Dam 25, east of Winfield, Mo., features a 1,300-foot long dam with a single lock that is 600 feet long and 110 feet wide. Having opened on May 18, 1939, Lock and Dam 25 is well beyond its 50-year design life and is currently undergoing major rehabilitation. The proposed upgrade will double the lock’s length to 1,200 feet, to accommodate modern barges. The National Corn Growers Association strongly supported the 2007 Water Resources Development Act, authorizing funding for lock and dam upgrades along the Mississippi and Illinois rivers. The organization supports funding of key projects so that inland waterways can be a safe and affordable way to move grain to market. Two separate meeting sessions are planned for Tuesday, March 31, starting at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., at the American Legion building, corner of Fifth and Elm, in Old Monroe, Mo. The public comment period ends April 15. |
